About the Regulatory Counsel Role

The Legal and Regulatory team at Paystack is looking for a lawyer with experience working on regulatory matters in Nigeria. In this role you will be part of the team that works to ensure that Paystack’s products and business operations comply with laws, ethics, and best practices in legal, compliance, and regulatory matters. Your job will be to support our regulatory matters in Nigeria.

You will do this by engaging with regulators in Nigeria and by advising the business on regulatory frameworks relevant to the expansion of its product suite. You will also support key regulatory initiatives in our expansion efforts. The successful candidate must be able to work with a wide range of teams, including fraud/disputes, human resources, finance, sales, products, engineers, and customer support, and provide pragmatic advice and guidance to build sustainable growth. The role will report to the Legal and Regulatory Lead. French language skills would be a plus, but is not required.

What you'll be doing

• Work with the legal and regulatory team to proactively identify the company’s obligations based on global financial/payments rules and regulations, including data privacy.
• Assist with license applications and regulatory approvals which may arise from time to time. Be able to advise the team on the best appropriate approach and strategy based on knowledge dealing with regulators.
• Work with in-house counsel and external counsel in multiple jurisdictions to opine on regulations and policies that will impact Paystack’s business, employees and customers.
• Support business and functional teams dealing with regulatory issues (including administrative work).
• Provide support to the Legal and Regulatory team including but not limited to managing records of contracts, correspondence with regulators and other legal documents.
• Represent Paystack at meetings with regulators, partners and other external audiences and advise on regulatory policy activities.
• Work with the regulatory team to establish relationships that align with our objectives and ensure an open line of communication with regulators.
• Work with the regulatory team to assess changes made to Paystack’s products and services and determine any regulatory impact on existing market operations. Scope to include but not limited to:
• Anti-bribery, anti-corruption and sanctions
• Data protection and privacy matters
• Anti-money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism
• Compliance with corporate governance regulations
• Support knowledge and education across the organisation to ensure compliance with policies and procedures. This will entail working with Human Resources.

What it takes to succeed at this role:
• You have at least 5 years of experience in a legal or regulatory function, advising clients on day-to-day regulatory and policy matters in Nigeria.
• Experience working in a major financial institution or technology company, financial services regulatory authority, or relevant experience within a well-established law firm. International experience is an advantage.
• You must be forward-thinking and able to advise management on anticipated issues.
• You have interpersonal skills, specifically you will be able to connect with a variety of internal and external stakeholders and customers from varying disciplines and cultures.
• Strong project management skills, capable of working on multiple tasks under tight deadlines. High levels of resilience.
• Your strong sense of initiative and self-motivation will add value to a fast-growing business.
• Excellent risk-based judgment, and the ability to make smart decisions in the face of ambiguity and imperfect information.
• You are an analytical thinker who can both draw-up and monitor relevant policies required to ensure controlled and sustainable growth.
• French language skills would be an advantage, but not required.
