The CPR Institute and the Steering Committee of the 2024 Africa Arbitration Day – New York (AAD-NY) are thrilled to invite qualified law students to participate in the 2024 Arbitration Moot Competition. The competition will take place on the morning of Friday, November 1, 2024, at the prestigious offices of White & Case LLP in New York City.
About the AAD-NY 2024 Arbitration Moot
The Africa Arbitration Day Moot is designed to foster the next generation of arbitration professionals, particularly those interested in Africa-related disputes. The competition will utilize the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot problem, providing a unique opportunity for students to prepare for the 32nd Vis Moot competition in Vienna, set for Spring 2025.
This is an unmissable opportunity for law students passionate about advancing their careers in arbitration and gaining hands-on experience alongside world-class practitioners.
Who Can Apply?
JD and LLM students currently enrolled in any law school with a demonstrated interest in arbitration and Africa-related disputes.
Application Process
To apply, simply submit:
A letter of interest (maximum 500 words), detailing your interest in Africa-related arbitration. Be sure to include your full name, law school, and degree program.
A curriculum vitae (CV).

Please note: While there is no fee to participate, students will need to cover their own travel expenses.
Financial Assistance
For those requiring financial support, the AAD-NY Scholarship Fund offers limited assistance to eligible students. The scholarship may cover part of your costs, but we encourage all participants to seek additional funding from their schools, communities, or organizations.
If you are interested in applying for financial assistance, you must include a letter with your application detailing:
The amount of funding requested,
How you plan to secure additional funding, and
How participating in the AAD-NY moot would contribute to the use of dispute resolution in your country.
Scholarship awards are reimbursed after participation in the moot, based on receipts submitted for eligible expenses.
What to Expect in the Competition
Participants will not be representing their law schools but will be paired individually with other students to form teams. Each team will consist of four participants—two for the claimant and two for the respondent—and each team will be assigned a coach.
Key dates:
Teams must submit a written argument (maximum 2,500 words, including footnotes) in Word format by 11:59 PM ET on Friday, October 18, 2024.
Oral arguments will be presented to a panel of mock arbitrators on Friday, November 1, 2024, at 10:30 AM ET, with registration starting at 10:00 AM ET.
Each team will have 30 minutes to present their case, split evenly among team members. Awards will be presented for Best Oralist and Best Written Submission, and winners will be recognized during the general AAD-NY program later that day, which participants are welcome to attend at no additional cost.
